At 8:00 pm on the first Tuesday of December the lighting of local Nativity scenes occurs throughout the nation. Sanford, Maine was no exception.
The Knights of Columbus St. Thomas Council of Sanford, Maine conducted the ceremony that Tuesday evening. Since the lighting of the creche fell on the Solemnity of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation, a group of St. Thomas Council Knights, their wives, and other St. Therese of Lisieux parishioners attended the 6:00 mass at Holy Family Church. Following mass, they also participated in a rosary service. They then reconvened at the Sanford City Park before the Nativity scene or Creche. After reciting prayers and singing Christmas hymns, they lit the Creche.
Though it was a chilly evening, a good time was had by all. The St. Thomas Council is responsible for maintaining and installing the Creche at the Sanford City Park every Christmas season.
