Divine Mercy Sunday (also known as the Feast of the Divine Mercy) is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, the eighth day in the Easter season. The feast day is observed by Roman Catholics as well as some Anglicans. It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Saint Faustyna Kowalska reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, and is associated with special promises from Jesus and indulgences issued by the Church.
Saint Faustyna Kowalska, born in 1905, was a nun who lived in Warsaw, Poland. She joined a convent at the age of 20 and died of tuberculosis in 1938. She was venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, beatified in 1993 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
