Status Update. Last Thursday 6/15 the City of Sanford, YCCAC, and Pastor Bell of Calvary Baptist Church entered an agreement to use the Old St Ignatius Gym, Lower Level as a “Temporary Warming Facility”. It has permission from the City to only operate until 7/2/23. It is being provided for only those 28 Angolan (and Haitian) families that arrived approximately 5 weeks ago and that moved out of the two hotels in town. This operation requires One fulltime worker and two volunteers on duty at all times around the clock. (Note to all….This is NOT a shelter).
The “Temporary Housing Facility” desperately needs volunteers 24/7. You will need to be background checked and briefly trained (30 mins, training is occurring daily). 4, 8 and 12 hour shifts are available. Please call Ella Davies at 207-650-2698, if you are willing to be a volunteer. A general Volunteer Sign up can be found here
Of the 28 families, YCCAC Housing navigators have found almost 20 apartments. Some families have already moved in (approximately 5 families). The remaining apartments that have been secured are becoming available later in June and into July. We still NEED HELP locating available apartments willing to take Governmental Assistance (GA) monies. If you have a lead on an apartment, please call Jen Davies at 207-608-9601.
Items for the families and their new apartments are also in need! Please see this link and sign up for what you are able to contribute:
Lastly, St Therese of Lisieux Parish and St. Thomas School are still accepting the following donations:
-feminine pads
-diapers (all sizes)
-sports bras
-socks
-underwear for men, women and children
-gently used luggage
Donations can be placed on the Parish Office porch in the black bin. Thank you!
